More transparency should be everyone’s goal

There was an interesting story in the Altoona Mirror this morning concerning SAT tests.  The story featured comments from a consultant who has four student clients in Blair County schools.  She explained that the comparative testing is necessary to guard against artificial grade inflation by schools.  There are different ways to boost GPA’s by the schools, from offering easy curriculum to weighting higher the scores of easier courses.  Standardized tests bring a level playing field to the system and generally, the system does not like it.  There was another story about doing away with the Keystone Exams; the legislation I’m sponsoring to eliminate them and require SAT’s or another option for vo-tech students was in this piece.  We must have some way to measure performance in a system that has no real accountability.  This information needs to be easily available to parents, as well, so that they can make decisions about their children’s academic experience.  More transparency should be everyone’s goal.
