I spent the day in Philadelphia visiting with the folks at Mastery Shoemaker Charter School. This school building, when operated as a traditional government school, had the second worst crime record of any junior high school in America. The charter school has turned that record and reputation around and developed a behavioral and academically successful program. And they did this with the same students, as required by the school district. The Youth Mentoring Program is a part of their success. This fitness-based program helps students develop the critical skills and character strengths necessary for future success. I was impressed with the school administration’s sincere effort to make things better, and obviously, their ability to turn one of the most violent schools in America into a safe haven for students.
