I’m still working through the details

Article posted on February 7, 2017

We have had the busiest first 9 days of session in recent history.  We continued to run important legislation today, even the same day as the Governor’s Budget Address.  In the Finance Committee this morning, we ran a series of pro-business bills, including my bill on allowing small businesses to carry forward net losses, like larger business can do now.  All of these bills passed this morning, some on party line votes.  We ran a bill on the floor today to withhold state funds from “Sanctuary Cities.”  This was done on a party line vote.  We are running Paycheck Protection tomorrow on the floor and the changes to the abortion laws regarding age of viability and death by dismemberment.  In the middle of all this activity, we listened to a very short Budget Address.  I’m still working through the details, but some of the highlights are: raising taxes on the gas and oil drillers, adding sales tax to a number of currently exempt items, expanding taxes on the insurance industry, raising the corporate income tax, increasing the minimum wage to $12 per hour (I don’t know why that’s part of the budget), providing more than 200 million additional dollars to schools, charging $25 for every person living in a municipality without a local police force, and doing a leaseback deal on the PA Farm Show Building.  I’ll have a lot more to say about the budget as we work through it.
