Advance the interests of students across the Commonwealth

Article posted on January 11, 2017

I was in Harrisburg today for a couple of meetings, primarily, my first meeting with the State Board of Education.  The actual board meeting is tomorrow, but today’s schedule included committee and council meetings.  I was able to spend a little extra time with staff and board members after this afternoon’s session and am getting acquainted with everyone and what role the board plays.  The board meets six times per year.  The members are appointed by the Governor for six-year terms, with the exceptions being the majority and minority chairs of the House and Senate Education Committees.  There are several student members, who do not have a vote, but are permitted to speak to issues.  We received a report from the Dept. of Ed and heard public comment.  I am anxious to work with the board to advance the interests of students across the Commonwealth.
