The William Penn Leadership Program is a unique opportunity for select high school juniors of the 30th Senatorial District, to find out what it would be like to be a Pennsylvania State senator for a day – to do research, debate bills, experience lobbying and vote. It is a chance for students to experience government outside of a textbook.
Throughout the coming weeks, my staff and I will post topics for discussion, research tools and links, draft legislation, and other information to help students successfully prepare for this year’s program. This research will play a vital role as students debate issues that directly affect their lives. Last year, students focused on teen driving issues, a cell phone ban and a smoking ban, among others.
We have designed the William Penn Leadership Program to be non-partisan and educational. Our hope is that by the end of the day, students have a better understanding of how their state government works and are encouraged to become engaged in Pennsylvania’s political process.
