Our offices were closed today for Martin Luther King Day. We’re headed back to Harrisburg tomorrow for a couple of days of session. I suspect that there will be quite a bit of discussion about events of the past month. Three Senators announced that they are not seeking another term, the Governor has weighed in on several matters and there have been reports of support or compromise on various issues currently before the legislature. Maybe a few bills can jump start this year, but knowing that most of the legislature is up for election, history shows that nothing too controversial will likely get done. There has been talk about going back to a lame duck session in the fall. This is a terrible idea and will erode some of the good faith that rule changes have produced. Keep an eye on this opportunity-for-bad-things-to-happen as the year progresses. The planning for it will be early in the year.
