Happy Labor Day! I stopped by the Juniata VFW’s Labor Day picnic this afternoon. I have been there before and expected a big crowd with good food and I wasn’t disappointed. They told me that they would serve about 600 people and that it took 40 volunteers to prepare everything. A lot of the neighborhood turns out including an 86 year old man who spoke to me as soon as I got there. He has been a member for over 50 years, lives a block away and has helped the club grow with his help over the years. This club gave away about $60,000 to local organizations and individuals last year. This was the second example I’ve seen this weekend of relatively small organizations working hard to make a big difference in their communities. I’m very impressed.
