Day 21 without a budget. We may have gotten another step closer today since the House took action on HB 1416. The House voted to not concur with the amendment the Senate passed so the next step is the formation of a conference committee where members of the House and Senate will sit together and eventually reach a compromise. That is the process, how it really will work remains to be seen. Questions like, how soon the conferees will be appointed, when the first meeting will be scheduled, how much negotiating behind the scenes with the Governor is done; these questions need to be answered. More importantly, this process doesn’t guarantee resolution anytime soon. We are still about $2 Billion apart from what the Governor wants and he is still talking about tax increases. It might be a long haul.
