EICHELBERGER TO INTRODUCE MARRIAGE AMENDMENT
Says Pennsylvania must act now to protect marriage definition
Harrisburg, PA – Wednesday, May 13, 2009, State Senator John H. Eichelberger, Jr. announced today his intention to introduce an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution that would strictly define marriage as being between one man and one woman.
“As more and more states begin to redefine marriage, it’s only a matter of time until a court decision usurps the citizen’s right to decide this is for themselves,” says John. “The Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), in an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, admitted what many of us have known for a long time, that proponents of gay marriage are counting on a court decision to give them what they can’t win through the legislature or at the ballot box. Because this is a Constitutional amendment, it would be put to the people for a vote, which is the proper way to decide what marriage is going to mean in this Commonwealth.”
Currently, thirty states have defined marriage as being between one man and one woman in their Constitution. Senator Eichelberger will circulate a memo tomorrow stating his intention to introduce the Marriage Amendment, and requesting that other Senators sign on to co-sponsor it. It will be formally introduced and receive a bill number in the coming weeks.
