I was in Mount Union this morning for an Elder Justice seminar sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging and Huntingdon County DA George Zanic. I was the first speaker and had a lot of questions from the audience about the budget and the direction of the Dept. of Aging spending. It makes sense to spend more money in the budget on quality of life issues than nursing home care with the goal of keeping people in their homes longer. This is obviously much cheaper and is also what people desire. We have not moved enough in that direction in PA. I went to a presentation in Altoona today on the proposed 1% sales tax to be levied on a county by county basis. The PA Economy League likes the idea, I don’t. I would be for the original proposal of levying this tax with 100% of the new tax money going to reduce property tax. This proposed plan provides for only 60% of the new tax money going to reduce property tax and only guarantees that the tax be reduced for one year, after that the county or municipality can raise it back up. This current proposal is just a tax increase in my book. I can’t support it.
