Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day everyone.  I took my mom to the East Freedom Fire Hall for a ham and turkey lunch with all of the fixins.  The guys at the fire hall told us that they served about 700 meals today, it was definitely the in place to be.  I worked around the house most of the day and did some long overdue fix up jobs at the office including hanging a picture in one room and putting hooks on the doors in the restrooms.  There wasn’t a whole lot in the news today.  It will be interesting to see how things develop with the budget the Senate sent over to the House last week.  The House will be back in session on Monday and the Democratic leadership has been very vocal in their opposition to the Senate’s budget bill.  The bottom line spending number is the key to this budget.  You can play games with projected growth figures to drive up next year’s expected revenue and then add more spending or on the expenditure side you can take Rainy Day funds or inject federal stimulus money to justify more spending.  The reality is that we would just be putting off the pain and digging ourselves in deeper.  In fact, many conservatives think that our spend number should equal our projected revenues, not a penny more.  This would drive the Senate’s budget down by hundreds of millions.  The plain and simple truth is that there is just not the money to continue the spending programs that are currently in place.  It boils down to what we really need, what we want and what we would like to see if there is anything extra.  At this point, there isn’t any room for much more than the core functions of government.  Maybe that’s where we should have been all along.
