More than I bargained for

As I have written about of late, I have been staining some grilles for the windows in my house. The grilles are inserted on the inside of the glass and give the look of the old fashioned panes. I have 26 windows which means that I have 52 grilles to stain with a small artist’s brush, it’s tedious work. The installation is a separate issue. There are spring loaded plastic prongs at the end of each piece of wood. The sash on the window has little holes drilled at each place where the wood touches the sash. The holes are filled with a plastic plug. I asked the local store that sells these windows what I do with the plug, they said nothing, the prong rests against the plug. That didn’t seem to work. I then called the manufacturer of the windows and asked what to do, they said to remove the plug. I tried that and damaged the sash. I figured out on my own to take a center punch and punch through the center of the plug and the prong fits in nicely. So much for the professional help. Today when I tried to install the upper grille on some larger windows, I learned that the center plug is under the locking mechanism on those windows. I now have to buy a tool to cut down the piece that fits into that plug in order to get that grille installed. Isn’t it always the case that these home fix-up projects are always more than you bargained for?
