We do not have the level of detail that I need to feel comfortable with the budget

July 2nd, 2008

I’m still on the floor of the Senate at 9:30 and we are not near finished for the night. That’s o.k. with me but the pace of stopping and starting, going to committee meetings or waiting for others to go to committee meetings is tough to get used to. We are told by leadership that we should have the budget passed through the legislature by late, and I mean late, tomorrow night. But, it could be Friday morning or even beyond if things do not come together as planned. The overall numbers seem to me to be the best that we could get this year, given the Governor’s and the House Democrat’s passion for spending. The problem at this point in time, is that we do not have the level of detail that I need to feel comfortable with the budget. We did get some more information today and may get more later tonight. I think that anyone who votes on the budget should understand it, as best you can, anyway. We shall see how things come together over the next 24 hours. I hope that things come together and soon.

  1. John Rafter Says:

Why does the spending of the PEOPLE”S money have to be shrouded in so much secrecy?
It was announced that legislative leaders agreed on a spending plan.
Why wasn’t it released right away?
What are they trying to hide?
Does any other state operate like this?
I think its time for a sunshine law for the legislature.
