Happy President’s Day. The state offices were closed today but some of us worked anyway. I talked with several of my staff today who were working on various things and another Senator called about some issues. I didn’t have any appointments so I got some paperwork caught up and a few emails. There wasn’t much news today coming out of Harrisburg, which isn’t a bad thing. I have a fairly busy week ahead including a policy committee meeting in Harrisburg on Thursday. I hope that the budget meetings are productive and people have identified some savings over the past six months like they were supposed to. Somehow, I don’t think anyone did. The 4.2% increase in spending the Governor talked about will grow to close to double that before the cuts start. My hope is that we would have identified a list of programs before now that could be changed, cut or eliminated so that we had some bargaining power. I’m predicting that every penny that is in the budget is critical, if you ask the administration.
