The Pennsylvania Senate’s State Government Committee made the right move by unanimously approving a bill that would ban state government employees from receiving bonuses. It’s something the full Senate should also pass, as well as the House of Representatives, so it can head to Gov. Ed Rendell’s desk.
And when it gets there, Rendell should affix his signature immediately.
Most Pennsylvanians were and are shocked upon hearing that top executives at the Pennsylvania Higher Education System, already earning $200,000 or more, also got six-figure bonuses. Those same citizens stew when they learn that House and Senate workers, who for the most part are highly paid, got a combined $3.6 million in bonuses last year.
Let’s face facts: State government workers already have better pay, better retirement and better health care plans than the average private sector workers to whom they are perpetually compared. Why do you think state jobs are so heavily sought? If anyone wants to work in a setting where big bonuses are part of the compensation, let them seek out jobs in the private sector.
