I had a full day starting with an early 4 mile run and an 8:00 breakfast. I had constituent meetings today and a luncheon at The Commonwealth Foundation. The most notable thing that happened to me, however, was that my Bonus Ban bill was passed in the State Government Committee. Although the vote was 10 to 0, I got a lot of resistance from Senator Anthony Williams, a Democrat from Philly. He seemed to object for the sake of objecting. Two other great bills were passed today on split votes. Jane Orrie had a great bill that makes so-called professional services selected competitively for all state government operations. This bill is of particular interest following many questions about how bond counsel will be chosen by the Turnpike Commission following the passage of Act 44. The other bill was sponsored by John Rafferty and would require Senate confirmation of the CEO’s of some of the state agencies to prevent pure political appointments made for all of the wrong reasons, another good bill. We now need to get these bills on to the floor for a vote. I did several press interviews today and the Fred Honsberger show on KDKA radio. I drove back to the district for the Blair County Farm Bureau’s 50th anniversary banquet, another good meal with farmers, they really know how to eat.
